Castlepoint is a 2-3 hour drive from Wellington, in the lower North Island of New Zealand. The drive itself through the Wairarapa is stunning, but Castlepoint is something special. The lighthouse is an obvious attraction, and is frequented by photographers, but the real gem is the surf! It breaks in through a space in the rocks known as ‘the gap’, and when the swell is right, it’s one of New Zealand’s best waves.
August’s free desktop wallpaper features the lighthouse sitting atop some amazing rock formations that have been hammered by the wind and ocean for millenia. I shot this just before sunrise a couple years ago and rediscovered it recently while sifting through my archives. Right-click the photo above to save or set as your desktop background. It will fit any screen from a smartphone or iPad to a laptop or 30″ display.
